Municipality of Basilisa

Basilisa, officially the Municipality of Basilisa (Surigaonon: Lungsod nan Basilisa; Cebuano: Lungsod sa Basilisa; Tagalog: Bayan ng Basilisa), is a 4th class municipality in the province of Dinagat Islands, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 36,880 people.

The municipality has a land area of 92.68 square kilometers or 35.78 square miles which constitutes 8.94% of Dinagat Islands's total area. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 36,880. This represented 29.00% of the total population of Dinagat Islands province, or 1.42% of the overall population of the Caraga region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 398 inhabitants per square kilometer or 1,031 inhabitants per square mile.


It is formerly known as Rizal.

The town became a part of the province of Dinagat Islands in December 2006, when the province was created from Surigao del Norte by Republic Act No. 9355. However, in February 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional, as the necessary requirements for provincial land area and population were not met. The town reverted to Surigao del Norte.On October 24, 2012, however, the Supreme Court reversed its ruling from the previous year, and upheld the constitutionality of RA 9355 and the creation of Dinagat Islands as a province.

According to the Bureau of Local Government Finance, the annual regular revenue of Basilisa for the fiscal year of 2016 was ₱88,259,597.07.

According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in Basilisa is 15 to 19, with 3,893 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is 80 and over, with 316 individuals.

Historical population

The population of Basilisa grew from 5,047 in 1970 to 36,880 in 2015, an increase of 31,833 people. The latest census figures in 2015 denote a positive growth rate of 1.63%, or an increase of 3,000 people, from the previous population of 33,880 in 2010.


The municipal center of Basilisa is situated at approximately 9° 60' North, 125° 31' East, in the island of Sibanoc. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 6.8 meters or 22.2 feet above mean sea level.
